That’s a great story Kenneth. My Dad was also a keen cyclist, took me on a cycle sidecar around the then mostly unmade roads of the far north of Scotland (where my Mum was from) when I was less than 2 years old. But gave me the cycling bug long before he passed away.

It depends on whether you want to carry all of your own gear (and how much, i.e. camping and cooking gear, or just a few clothes because you'll sleep in motels and eat in restaurants); also on whether you intend to be on paved roads or not. One example is the recently-discontinued Trek 520. They made it (with some changes over the years) for 40 years. Check it out, at least as a starting point for your thinking.
